With such a huge population back in 1300, there was nowhere as densely
populated as Bologna in all of Europe. And to cope with all the
peoples demands of the city, over 150 bars were opened to cater
for the demand. The demand was further inflated by all the influx
of students from all over the world. The top students from all
over the world would lounge around in these taverns and discuss
the meaning of the world, while they munched on their sausages
and mortadella while knocking back litres of the local vino. The
taverns catered for the students, the artists, the hard core drinker
as well as famous intellectuals day in day out.
During the world war 1 and 2, a lot of these bars disappeared, but
there is still a great culture of drinking and socialising in this
great city. Nowadays there is over 200 taverns and wine bars, and
beer gardens and pubs in the city. Great traditional taverns such
as the Osteria del Sole, the Osteria da Mario and Osteria della Fondazza
are well worth paying a visit and soak up the atmosphere while blending
in with the locals. |
