The main religious part of the city is found around the ancient Piazza
Maggiore and this is also the political heart of the city belongs,
and can be accessed via Piazza del Nettuno where the Roman God
Neptune statue stands. The Piazza Maggiore is just beautiful and
is real living proof that this city had a glorious history. The
area is just great for taking a scenic walk around. The Basilica
di San Petronio dominates the Squares skyline with its incomplete
facade which is being slowly restored.
The Jewish Ghetto has the unique labyrinthine laneways and has retained
its original structure for hundreds of years and is well worth a
stroll through and visit some of the craftsman’s workshops
dotted around the area.
The districts of Bologna took their names from the Gate ways of the
ancient city walls. There are many beautiful gardens located among
the built up urban areas.
One other feature that symbolises Bologna is the hills. One can take
long strolls through the hills and visit ancient villas, sanctuaries
and convents. Near the top of one of the hills is the Sanctuary of
the Blessed Virgin of San Luca on the della Guardia Hills which provide
excellent panoramic views of the valleys. |
